Teaching Artist at Juvenile Diversion Initiative, A Reason To Survive (ARTS), ARTS 4 Justice Program
Zadé Helena facilitates art making workshops as part of ARTS’ Juvenile Diversion Initiative (JDI), a restorative justice program in partnership with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and the National Conflict Resolution Center. They design and lead trauma-informed sessions where system-impacted youth can explore identity, self-expression, and emotional regulation through soft sculpture and hand sewing. Participants were supported in developing creative confidence, fine motor skills, socioemotional learning and narrative-building through the creation of handmade plush characters, while contributing to a safe and welcoming space that encourages accountability, play, and healing.
ARTS on Campus with A Reason To Survive Organization
I bring high-quality, trauma-informed arts programming directly to El Toyon Elementary school in National City, San Diego. I design and facilitate dynamic workshops that integrate visual art, storytelling, and social-emotional learning for youth in grades 2–6. I encourage collaboration, communication, and leadership by guiding students through hands-on projects in sewing, sculpture, and mixed media. I build inclusive classroom environments rooted in cultural awareness, community-building, and creative empowerment. I support youth voice and agency while fostering a sense of belonging and wonder through accessible, joy-filled art experiences. Notable projects I’ve led include Dr. Emoto’s Rice Experiment, Solarpunk City, and Diwata Miniature Gardens.
